Miami Hurricanes Coast Past Geogia Tech Yellow Jackets

The Miami Hurricanes pulled off a smooth 70-61 victory against Georgia Tech at the Watsco Center. Miami was shorthanded as Ja’Quan Newton has been suspended 3 games for violating team rules. Tonight was the first game of that suspension. The team was able to maximize the minutes from their bench on the way to win. Playing only 7 players, the team got quality minutes off of the bench.

Coach Larranaga was disappointed in Newton. When asked about Newton, he had a very rapid response. “I told someone earlier today. My job as a coach is to mentor these young men and try to set the right example for these young men. They have to learn to make good decisions when I am not looking over their shoulder. They are kids. They make mistakes. Whether it is on the court or off of the court. We have to discipline them, not punish them.”

Without Newton, the team was able to great effort from players all around. DJ Vasiljevic was in particular was 3 of 6 from deep and had 13 points and assist. He asked how he felt after playing so many minutes. “I am a little banged up, but I am from Serbia so we are tough. A little ice and I’ll be okay.” The team also go great scoring from Dewan Huell who scored 13 points and had 2 rebounds as well. The team moved the ball well against Georgia Tech’s zone and was able to get easy scores for Huell inside the paint.

The team actually only played 6 players after the second half. Ebuka Izundu was injured in the first half with what appeared to be an ankle injury. He was able to return and warm up after the halftime break. He came back in the game for a few minutes before falling to the ground due to cramping. He had to be assisted into the locker room by his fellow teammates.

The Hurricanes next game is against the 14-11 Clemson Tigers. The game is on February 18th at the Watsco center.  The team will be looking for more even scoring from the team as it will be without Newton for the next two games. Hope to see you there natives.
