Bruce Brown Dominates North Carolina Tar Heels

The Miami Hurricanes were able to pull off an upset against #9 ranked University if North Carolina with a 77-62 win. The win brought Miami to 14-6 and gave North Carolina their fourth loss of the season. The Tar Heels got manhandled by the Canes rookie Bruce Brown who they could not contain. Coach Williams said it was “a big time kick in our rear end.”

The Tar Heels led early in the game and the Canes appeared to have a slow start to the game when trailed 11-2. The key for the Canes appeared to be their zone defense and the ability to run the shooters off the three-point line. They forced contested 3’s and switched matchups on screens. North Carolina shot the ball 6-29 which was 20.7% in the first half.

The game plan during the game changed when the Canes started behind 11-2 in the first half. Ja’Quan Newton gave some insight into the great defense they played. “Actually, the zone wasn’t even in our game plan. We went zone when they made their first couple shots, and it disrupted their shots.” The Tar Heels founds some holes in the zone in second half, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. The Canes only needed 3 players in double digits to seal the victory.

Miami got a bulk of his scoring from Bruce Brown. He had in impressive stat line against a premiere ACC match up with 30 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Coach L mentioned his performance as well. “Everything you would want from a player, Bruce Brown delivers.” Brown is the first rookie to score 30 points since Miami joined the ACC. “Me personally, its good. I am just happy we won. All I care about is winning."

The Canes next game is Wednesday February 1st against Florida State. Florida State is currently 18-3 and have been playing well. It is an 8:00pm Tip Off at the Watsco Center. See you there Natives!
