Miami Hurricanes Basketball Team Over Powers NC State
The Miami Hurricanes were over powering in their 81-63 win over NC State. The Canes guards showed up big against a highly touted NC State guard Dennis Smith Junior. Smith Jr is on a lot of mock drafts in the top 5 of this year’s upcoming draft. Many rankings have him at number two. The Watsco Center was filled with plenty of NBA scouts in attendance to see his performance against a very defensively sound team.
The Hurricanes showed up big for the challenge. Davon Reed and Ja’Quan Newton in particular appeared more aggressive when matched up against Smith Jr. Newton had 21 points and 4 rebounds, and Reed had 20 points and 2 steals. When Reed was asked about the game plan against Smith “We treated him like every other player.” Smith scored 5 in the first half, and exploded for 16 more in the second half with 7-14 shooting overall.
Miami had a balanced scoring attack with 4 players in double digits. Kamari Murphy was outstanding with a 11 points and 10 rebound double-double. Bruce Brown is continuing his great all around play. The freshman is gaining more minutes for Coach Larranaga because of his excellent scoring and great ball handling. He had to run point guard when Newton went out of the game temporarily with cramping in his leg. He finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Miami outhustled and outworked them in every category. They were able to out rebound them, have less turnovers, and more steal. Miami shot it 47% from the field and kept NC State under 40%. Miami is looking to carry some of the momentum from the conference win into their matchup with Syracuse on January 4th. Miami’s next home game will be January 12th against Notre Dame.
